Spotlight Story: Julian Cannon

This month, we are honored to share the inspiring story of Julian Cannon, a young learner at Autism ETC’s Professional Park/Clarksville location. Julian has been part of our full-time Day Therapy Program since May 2024. His journey is told through the voice of his devoted mother, Sara Cannon.

A Mother’s Observation and Action

Sara first noticed developmental changes in Julian when he was around one year old. “He wasn’t playing with toys the way he used to, and his motor skills seemed delayed compared to other children,” she recalled. “He wasn’t speaking, only engaging in vocal stimming, and began exhibiting self-injurious behaviors.” Concerned, Sara spoke to Julian’s pediatrician, who recommended evaluation for autism. Julian received his official diagnosis in January 2024 at just 2 years old. ABA therapy was strongly advised, and Sara quickly took steps to get him on the waiting list at Autism ETC. An opening occurred in April, 2024, and Julian began his therapeutic journey.

Early Challenges and Big Breakthroughs

Sara remembers feeling a mix of hope and anxiety when Julian started at the center. “The beginning was tough,” she said. “Julian had difficulty adjusting. He couldn’t express his wants or needs, and communication was a real struggle.” However, with the support of his dedicated team, things began to change. Julian learned to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), a powerful tool that gave him a way to communicate. “Because of PECS, his frustration has significantly decreased,” Sara noted.

Remarkable Progress

The progress Julian has made in such a short time has been nothing short of extraordinary. “His behavioral issues have drastically improved—from 96 incidents an hour to just 4,” Sara shared. She credits this transformation to the compassionate and skilled staff at Autism ETC, especially his Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), Jakob Moore. “Jakob has been wonderful with Julian. They’ve built a trusting, supportive relationship that means so much to us.”

Words of Encouragement

Reflecting on the journey, Sara offers heartfelt advice to other families starting ABA therapy: “It’s not easy at first—adjusting takes time. But the results can be life-changing. I often see negative stories shared online, and I try to counter those by sharing Julian’s success. I want other parents to know that help is out there, and it works.”

Hopes for the Future

Looking ahead, Sara’s dreams for Julian are filled with love and hope. “I pray that one day he’ll speak. I want him to live a full life, attend school, make friends, and thrive—however different his path may be.”
