Spotlight Story: Benson Myrtil

This month, we are honored to share the journey of 5-year-old Benson Myrtil, as told by his mother, Breana. Benson receives services at Autism ETC – Music Valley in Nashville.

Breana began by recalling what first led their family to Autism ETC:

“Initially, Benson had a significant speech delay. We started with speech therapy, developmental therapy, and later added occupational therapy. I began noticing more challenges—he preferred to play alone, would flop on the floor, and often ran into the wall because he liked the pressure from the impact. He had several sensory issues and was struggling in the preschool classroom. That’s when we decided to have him evaluated for autism. Benson’s pediatrician suggested Autism ETC for a diagnostic evaluation, and in June 2024, he was diagnosed.

In January 2025, Benson started full-time in the Day Therapy Program. Breana recalls, “I was super excited for him to begin because the program offered one-on-one services tailored to his needs and goals. Benson loved having that dedicated attention—something he missed while in daycare. He likes having ‘his person.’”

Progress and Growth: “It’s almost like night and day. His coping skills have improved, and he’s learning to share—especially important since he has a younger brother. He can now sit and focus in the classroom, and he enjoys arts and crafts. Before, he didn’t like coloring, but now he loves it! His elopement has improved, and we see far fewer tantrums. He’s calmer, less easily upset, and he talks things out. We can now have full conversations—something that wasn’t possible before. He’s truly thriving!

Benson recently transitioned to kindergarten. He now attends Autism ETC part-time and is doing well with the change. He’s in a general education classroom with some special education support. He especially enjoys the cafeteria and being with the ‘big kids.’”

Support for the Whole Family: “I’ve learned so many small but helpful strategies for both Benson and his little brother. Benson now walks alongside us when we’re out and shares play spaces with his brother. Before, he used to smash things; now, he offers toys and respects when someone says they don’t want to play. Seeing that growth is truly amazing.”

Words of Encouragement: To families who are just beginning their autism journey, Breana offers this advice: “Stick with the therapy. Don’t get discouraged. There are good days and bad days, but you have to trust the process.”

Looking Ahead: “The skills Benson is learning at Autism ETC will help him succeed in a neurotypical world. These are lifelong tools that will help him thrive. Attending the center has set him up for success in kindergarten, where otherwise he may have struggled. I truly believe this foundation will make all the difference.”
